Nova-Lee Venter was born with bilateral profound hearing loss; both her parents and grandparents are deaf and communicate using sign language. Hear Us helped with covering the cost of radiology tests needed to determine if she would be a suitable cochlear implant candidate. She subsequently received a cochlear implant in August 2022 at 18 months, and her listening development has been very positive since then. However, for her hearing to develop fully, she needs to be hearing spoken language for 10 hours a day, which is difficult when there is no speaking adult at home. She is now attending the Carel du Toit Centre and Hear Us is contributing to the costs for a Language Assistant helps her with spoken language.
