The Nellie Atkinson Trust gave a donation that covered the shortfall from private fundraising and medical aid by the family of Elle Ahrendse so that she could receive bilateral simultaneous cochlear implant surgery. She is a 3-year-old learner at the Carel du Toit School. Elle had the surgery on 17 May 2021 and the devices were “switched on” on 8 June where she could then start to hear sounds. Her mother reports that she is adapting really well to the cochlear implants and is aware of many more sounds, especially low frequencies.
